Gate installation is a site problem before it is a product decision. The driveway width, the slope, where the power is, how far the gate sits from the house and what the ground is made of all narrow the options before anyone chooses a style.
Goody Garage Doors handles automatic gate installation across Tucson and Southern Arizona for private driveways, gated developments and commercial premises. We survey on site and quote against your property rather than a catalog.
Swing gates suit level driveways with room for the leaves to travel. They are usually the more attractive option on a residential entrance and the operators are simpler. They need clear ground through the arc, and they need the driveway to be reasonably flat, which rules them out on the steeper foothills and Tanque Verde entrances where the drive climbs from the road.
Slide gates run parallel to the boundary and need a run of clear space alongside the opening. They cope with slope where a swing gate cannot, and they are the practical answer on narrow lots and on commercial frontages where a swing arc would reach into a road or parking area. On a dirt or gravel drive, a cantilever slide gate avoids a ground track entirely, which matters more here than it would in a wetter climate.
The choice is usually made for you by the site. We work it out during the survey and tell you which one your entrance actually supports.
Many Tucson-area properties, particularly around Marana, Vail, Corona de Tucson, the far foothills and the acreage lots east of the city, have gates hundreds of feet from the nearest power. Trenching that distance is expensive and disruptive, so solar is often the sensible answer rather than a compromise.
Solar works well here when it is specified properly. The system needs to be sized for the actual cycle count, not the average, with battery capacity to carry several days of cloud during monsoon season and enough panel output to recover with a dust film on the glass. Undersized solar is the single most common problem we find on gates installed by others, and it presents as a gate that works fine in spring and fails in August.
Where mains power is available and reasonably close, it remains the simpler option, and we can run and terminate the supply as part of the installation.
Keypads are the standard for family and staff access, and code changes are easy to manage. Siting matters in this climate: a keypad in full western sun ages faster, so we position it out of the worst exposure where the entrance layout allows.
Transmitters and receivers handle daily vehicle access, with rolling code security on current systems.
Telephone and video entry suits properties expecting regular visitors and is the usual specification for community gates, letting residents grant access remotely.
Card and fob readers are the common choice for commercial sites and multi-tenant premises where access needs to be issued and revoked per person.
Free exit devices, whether loop detectors buried in the driveway or infrared exit sensors, open the gate automatically for departing vehicles. On unpaved driveways an exit loop needs to be installed with the ground movement in mind, and we would rather discuss that during the survey than repair it after the first monsoon.
An automatic gate stands in full sun every day of the year, so the material and the finish decide how it looks and works in five years.
The most common choice in Tucson and the most versatile for design, covering everything from plain picket infill to scrollwork and laser-cut desert panels. Steel is strong enough for wide spans and takes any finish. It has to be welded and sealed properly, because corrosion starts at untreated joints, and it is the heaviest option, which raises the operator specification.
Lighter than steel, will not rust, and puts noticeably less load on the operator and the battery. That makes it worth specifying on long slide gates and on solar systems where power budget matters. Aluminum will not carry the same span as steel without additional framing, so it suits standard residential entrances better than very wide commercial openings.
Cedar, alder and composite panels set into a steel or aluminum frame give the desert-modern and ranch appearance many Tucson properties suit. Real wood needs refinishing on a cycle under this level of ultraviolet exposure. Composite holds color far longer and is the sensible substitute where the look matters more than the material.
Powder coating is the finish we specify rather than wet paint, because it is baked on and holds up against ultraviolet exposure that fades and chalks paint within a few Tucson summers. Textured and matte blacks, bronzes and desert tones are the usual palette here, and they hide dust better than gloss. On steel gates a galvanized or primed base under the powder coat is what stops corrosion appearing at the welds later.
Material also determines gate weight, which sets the operator specification, the hinge and wheel requirements and the power draw. That is settled before anything is ordered rather than discovered afterwards.
Gate pricing moves more than most home projects because almost nothing about it is standard. Five things drive the number, and knowing them makes competing quotes comparable.
Span and height set the fabrication cost and the structural requirement. A twelve-foot single-leaf entrance and a twenty-four-foot double entrance are different builds, not the same gate at different widths.
Material and infill come next. Aluminum, ornamental steel and steel with wood or composite infill sit at different price points, and decorative work such as scrollwork or laser-cut panels adds to it.
Operator specification follows gate weight and expected daily cycles. A residential operator moving a light aluminum gate a few times a day and a commercial-duty operator running a heavy steel gate forty times a day are not interchangeable.
Power supply is the variable that surprises people. Mains power close to the entrance is straightforward, trenching a long run is a significant line item, and a properly sized solar system sits somewhere between the two.
Access control and safety devices are the last piece, covering keypads, transmitters, telephone or video entry, card readers, free exit detection, photo eyes and safety edges.
Goody Garage Doors quotes each of those separately in writing so you can see what you are paying for and compare it properly against any other quote. Site conditions such as post foundations in caliche, driveway slope or an entrance that needs regrading are identified at survey rather than added later.
Communities with design review, including much of Oro Valley, the Catalina Foothills, Dove Mountain and SaddleBrooke, set their own rules on gate height, style, materials and color, and some require a submission and approval before work begins rather than an inspection afterwards. Getting this wrong is expensive, because a gate that fails review is a fabricated item that cannot simply be repainted.
We check what applies to your address during the survey and supply the specification and drawings you need to file a submission.
Often, yes. Requirements differ inside City of Tucson limits and in unincorporated Pima County, and they commonly cover setback from the road, the gate swing not encroaching on the right of way, sight lines at the entrance and any electrical work involved.
Emergency access is the other requirement people miss. Fire and emergency services need a way through a gated entrance, which is generally handled with a Knox box or an approved override, and it should be designed in rather than added afterwards.
A powered gate is heavy machinery on a residential driveway. Every installation we carry out includes entrapment protection: photo eyes across the opening, safety edges where the design requires them, correctly configured force limits on the operator, and a manual release you know how to use.
We will not fit a gate without those systems, and we test them with you before handover so you know what they do and what it means if one starts faulting later.
Goody Garage Doors licensed technicians survey your requirements and look at the opening width, the slope, ground conditions, available power, cycle expectations, access control needs and any community or permitting requirements. You get a written quote with the gate, operator, access control and safety devices specified individually, so it can be compared properly against any other quote.
The installation covers posts and foundations, gate fabrication or supply, operator mounting and setup, power or solar system installation, access control and safety device fitting, and commissioning with force and travel settings tested. Timescale depends on fabrication lead time and whether foundations need to cure before the gate is hung.
The full coverage list is on our areas we serve page. Most of our gate installation work sits on the edges of the metro, where lots are larger and entrances are set back from the road: Marana, Oro Valley, Tanque Verde, Catalina Foothills, SaddleBrooke, Sahuarita and Green Valley, along with the acreage properties around Vail and Corona de Tucson. We also install on in-town properties across Tucson, Casas Adobes and Flowing Wells where the driveway allows it.
Call (520) 314-1470 to arrange a site survey and written quote for automatic gate installation in Tucson. Photographs of your entrance and a rough driveway width are useful on the first call and help us bring the right information with us.
We install and support the major operator brands, including LiftMaster, DoorKing, Viking, Ramset, All-O-Matic and FAAC, in both swing and slide configurations. The right operator depends on gate weight, span, duty cycle and power source rather than brand preference, and we specify it against your entrance.
Often, yes. The gate has to be structurally sound, hanging true and within the weight and span range of a suitable operator. We assess the posts, hinges or wheels first, because fitting an operator to a gate that is already dropping shifts the strain onto the motor and shortens its life.
Annual service is right for a typical residential gate and twice yearly for community, commercial or heavily used gates. Dust exposure drives the interval, so gates on unpaved driveways benefit from the shorter one. Solar systems also need the panel kept clean and the battery checked before summer.
Fabrication lead time is usually the longest part. On site, the work generally spans several days because post foundations need to cure before the gate can be hung and the operator set.
Every operator has a manual release, and battery backup on mains systems keeps the gate running through an outage for a set number of cycles. On a solar system the battery already provides that. We show you the manual release at handover.
