Garage door cables are a safety component. When they fray, snap or come off the drum, the door can drop on one side, bind in the track or come down without warning.
Goody Garage Doors repairs and replaces cables for homeowners throughout Phoenix, Mesa, Tucson and the surrounding Arizona communities, with same-day service available. We are licensed and insured in Arizona under ROC #320355.
If a cable has already gone, leave the door where it is. A door running on one cable is unbalanced, and every cycle after that puts load through the opener, the tracks and the remaining cable that none of them were built to take. It is also worth knowing that cables rarely fail on their own. A broken spring throws a shock load onto them, so when we attend a cable call we check the spring system as part of the same visit rather than fixing the symptom and leaving you with the cause.
Cables work with the spring system to control how the door travels. The springs provide the lifting force and the cables transfer it to the bottom corners of the door, keeping both sides moving at the same rate so the door does not rack.
They are also a backup. If a spring lets go, the cables slow the descent rather than letting the door fall. Because they run under the same tension as the springs, damage to a cable affects the whole system rather than one corner of it.
Cable problems usually show themselves before they fail outright, which is worth knowing because catching one early is a routine job and catching one late is an emergency.
Stop using the door if any of these appear. A slack or uneven cable means the door is running out of balance, and left alone it takes the tracks, drums, springs and opener with it.

These attach to a drum at the top of the door and run down to a bracket at the bottom corner of each side. As the torsion spring unwinds it turns the drum, which winds the cable and lifts the door. This is what most modern residential doors across the Phoenix, Mesa and Tucson metros use.
On doors with extension springs, a secondary cable runs through the centre of each spring along the horizontal track. These are not lift cables. Their job is to contain a spring if it snaps, so it does not travel across the garage. They are standard practice on every extension spring system, and if yours are missing or damaged we will flag it on any service visit, including a routine maintenance tune-up.
Garage door cables sit under several hundred pounds of tension at all times. Replacing or re-threading one without knowing how to release that tension safely risks the cable snapping back or the door dropping without warning, and the tools for releasing spring tension and respooling a drum correctly are not tools most households own.
For us it is routine work, usually one to two hours in a single visit. Attempting it yourself risks injury, further damage to the door and a repair bill considerably larger than the one you started with.
How much does cable repair cost in Arizona? Pricing depends on cable type, door size and whether the drums or bottom brackets need attention at the same time. We give you the figure before any work starts rather than publishing a range that would not match your door.
Goody Garage Doors licensed technicians release the spring tension safely, replace the cables as a pair, inspect the drums and bottom brackets, re-balance the door and run the safety reversal test before leaving.
We check the spring system on every cable call as a matter of course, because a failed spring is the most common reason a cable unspools in the first place. If the springs are at the end of their life, you will hear that at the time rather than on a second call-out a month later.
No. Keep the door down and call for a same-day repair. A door with a cable off the drum is unbalanced and can drop.
Usually, yes. Both cables are the same age and have run under the same load, so replacing the pair avoids a second call-out and keeps the door balanced.
Often. A spring failure puts a sudden shock load on the cables, which is what makes them unspool, slip the drum or snap. We inspect the whole system rather than just the cable that failed.
On a typical household door, eight to twelve years, though it depends on cycle count and on how well the door has been kept in balance. A door running out of balance wears one cable noticeably faster than the other, which is often the first clue something else is wrong.

Bailey at Goody Garage was on the job early Saturday morning and helped us get our “very heavy” garage door back up and running! We needed 4 new springs and he was able to get it done that morning. We were able to choose the best type of springs for our garage and was very pleased with the price and service. We would highly recommend Goody Garage Door Service.

Reid was prompt, friendly and honest. My garage door, which was worked on earlier this year by another company, was in pretty bad shape and I was feeling hopeless. Knowing I couldn’t afford to pay for an entire new door, I was skeptical to spend any more money than I already did previously on temporary fixes that would still cost a fortune, but Reid offered a reasonable price and explained what he did well. Glad I reached out and worked with this company.
